Section 1 - Research Justification:
My research topic is about how advertising can impact on health and change eating behaviors. I chose this topic because it's affecting us as humans and our health. Moreover, if advertising really impacts on changing eating behavior could it lead to obesity? And if the answers is yes, it would be a beneficial research since obesity is one of the major health problems in our society in the United Arab Emirates. According to CSHD (Center for Strategic Healthcare Development) statistics state that “ over 60% of Emirati nationals are overweight and this figure is expected to rise.” (Obesity in the United Arab Emirates, 2009). The UAE government are trying to educate Emiratis about obesity and exploring ways for educating the public to reduce the obesity rates. This research will be done through an experimental quantitative research to prove whether or not videos or advertisements could affect people's choices.
Section 2 - Background Report Summary:
Section 3 - Experiment Explanation:
Section 4 - Experiment Results:
As it's showing from the chart, I did two experiments on two groups. The accuracy of the experiment for group 1 was 90% and for group 2 it was 85%. The accuracy percentage was provided by the data that I got from the three questions I asked after the video. Looking at the chart we can get that the result of the first experiment according to the participant's choice between a cookies or an apple, from group 1 (who watched a video about football shoes) was 10 students choose cookies, 3 students chose apples and 1 student chose neither cookies nor apples. The result for group 1 matched my hypothesis which was more students will choose cookies instead of apples. While in the other hand, group 2 (who watched video about what 200 calories looks like in term of food) 4 students chose cookies, 9 students chose apples as it's showing in the chart.
Section 5 - Discussion:
After researching about this topic and analyzing the data that i got from the experiment, I found out that advertisements can really impact on people's diet. Although it might seem ridiculous to believe that a 2 minute video could somehow change your ability to chose the healthier. Moreover, I was amazed that not only children, even educated adults as we've seen in the experiment could be affected by the advertisements. In conclusion, I think more studies should be done on this topic on larger groups with different backgrounds to get even more accurate results and governments should take commercials in consideration if their goal is to have a less obese and healthier society.

Section 2 - Background Report Summary:
From the resources I
found out that according to IHRP (University of Illinois at Chicago Institute
for Health Research and Policy) which received a $2.2 million federal
grant to determine whether or not TV food advertising affects children's diet.
They found out that there is a relation between the food advertising and
children’s diet; their research proves that those who were exposed to junk
food commercials tend to choose unhealthy food. On the other hand, children who
are not exposed to food commercials tend to choose food more naturally.
My other resource
explained more about why TV can lead to obesity. And another research done
on American children proved that, the average American child sees nearly 8,000
commercials on TV for food and beverages, and only 165 of these are for
nutritious options like fruits and vegetables. That’s what changes their behavior
and makes them snack more, eat more unhealthy food and eat more calories.
Section 3 - Experiment Explanation:
Purpose:
Whether or not watching a video about healthy eating affects people’s choice of choosing what to eat.
Method:
Each group was subjected to approximately 4 min video and then asked to choose between a cookie or an apple
Participants:
The participants were from two different groups; group 1 was be made up of of 14 students; their ages were between 19 to 23 years old and they are third year students from Abu Dhabi Men's College from Mechanical Engineering Department. Group 2 was made up of 13 students; their ages were between 19 to 23 years old and they are third year students from Abu Dhabi Men's College from Chemical Engineering Department.
Hypothesis:
was that more students will choose the healthy snack (apple) after watching the video about health compared to students who watch the video about football shoes.
